Progression steps to safely start kite surfing
- Do your research before you purchase your first kite. Chat to people who already kitesurf or ask advice at your local shop. Its important that you purchase the right kite for your desired riding style (surf board or twin tip. freestyle or big air) as changing gear later can be expensive.
- Understand the wind direction and how it will influence the behaviour your kite.
- Learn how to setup the kite, roll out your lines and launch the kite.
- Make sure you know how the quick release safety system works.
- Understand the kite power zones and how the kite generates lift/power.
- Master body dragging in the water, learning how the kite turns and how aggressive kite movement generates power.
- Only once you master body dragging one should attempt to learn how stand on the board.
Accreditation
The International Kiteboarding Organization (IKO) was founded in 2001 by kiteboarders Frédéric Béné and Eric Beaudonnat. Since then, it has grown to become the largest kiteboarding organization in the world.
IKO now have 350 affiliated centers, an active community of over 600,000 kiters, 5,000 certified instructors, and more than 60 countries.
IKO make investments in digital technologies to provide the resources and tools necessary to begin kiteboarding safely and advance.
