Five-strut kites are typically designed for performing big air maneuvers and are therefore equipped with a great top end. They are specifically engineered to handle strong winds, allowing the rider to jump to great heights when fully powered. As a result, they tend to have a higher aspect ratio.
Advantages:
Setting up the kite is simple as there are only four lines to potentially tangle. The leading edge (LE) can be smaller because it requires a bridle to support it at several points. Additionally, kites using a single front line safety system still have full depower when the quick release is activated. Furthermore, a bridle can aid in relaunching the kite in certain situations.
Disadvantages:
Dual front line safety systems may take some time to depower and in some cases may not work as intended. As bridles have pulleys, they can be a weak point that may fail under heavy loads. Some claim that the extra drag near the kite, caused by the bridle, can negatively impact upwind performance.
The 5th line was a great innovation in helping to relaunch “C” kites and a safety item.
Advantages:
The kite’s safety system is highly effective, as it inverts the kite upon activation and allows it to settle on its back in the water. In addition, there is no bridle on the leading edge, which simplifies matters because there are usually no pulleys involved. Furthermore, certain C-kite models can be used to relaunch the kite without requiring the rider to swim towards it.
Disadvantages:
The bar has more lines, which increases the likelihood of tangling during setup. Due to their higher aspect ratio, 5-line models do not typically relaunch as well. Lastly, there is the potential for the “bow-tie conundrum,” where the kite inverts and the 5th line becomes tangled around the middle of the kite. Although this is rare, it is still a potential issue to be aware of.
